Genomic evaluation of feed efficiency in US Holstein heifers

There is growing interest in improving feed efficiency traits in dairy cattle. The objectives of this study were to estimate the genetic parameters of residual feed intake (RFI) and its component traits [dry matter intake (DMI), metabolic body weight (MBW), and average daily gain (ADG)] in Holstein heifers, and to develop a system for genomic evaluation for RFI in Holstein dairy calves.

Targeted genetic improvement can reduce the environmental impact of beef from beef x dairy production systems

We present the first LCA to quantify the environmental benefits of genetic improvement targeted for improved feed efficiency and growth in BxD systems in the US and UK, yielding a 4.2-8.7% reduction in overall environmental footprint across systems in 2024.
